During the fall and winter seasons, it is especially important to keep catch basin tops clear in order to allow water to drain properly. Leaves, debris or snow/ice buildup on a catch basin’ grate and interferes with the catch basin's ability to function properly. Maintaining a clear grate will aid in proper water flow and lessen the likelihood of a water back up to occur. Milton has over 3,800 catch basins along our streets and the Department of Public Works regularly schedules and completes catch basin cleanings (interior), it is not possible to clear every catch basin grate (exterior) prior to a storm event. The DPW therefore asks residents and business owners to help reduce the risk of localized street flooding by taking the time to monitor and clear the grate near you as needed. It is recommended to clear debris from the catch basin grate prior to a storm event when possible. Monitoring of a catch basin is also recommended throughout the storm event as additional debris may clog the grates.
The Town wishes to thank residents and businesses for their attentiveness and cooperation during storm events.
