Welcome to the Urban Forestry section of the Milton DPW website. We are presently upgrading this section, so please bear with us.

Among its varied responsibilities, the Milton DPW is responsible for caring for the public tree stock in our Town.  This includes planting new trees, removing diseased trees, and trimming existing trees that are on public property. A special DPW crew performs ongoing tree maintenance such as watering and trimming, as well as responds to resident's needs and requests.

Protection of public trees dates back to colonial times where the state of Massachusetts set a standard for the nation establishing laws for the protection of trees.  There are currently state laws which require every city and town to have a public tree officer to stand as advocate for public shade trees.

New tree requests: Residents may fill out an on-line application requesting a new tree.  Residents may also call Rita Fantasia at (617)898-4968 to request that a request form be sent to you.

Requests for trimming trees may be directed to the DPW Yard staff at (617) 898-4900.

Requests for tree removals may also be directed to the DPW at (617) 898-4900.  The tree removal request is first reviewed by the DPW's arbor-care staff to determine the health of the tree.   If the staff determines that the tree is not healthy, it will be removed.  If the DPW staff determines the tree is healthy, the Town's Tree Warden, Branch Lane, will determine if the tree can be removed.  Please note: healthy trees are removed only in rare cases.
