MILTON RESIDENTS CAN BRING HHW TO DEDHAM OCT. 14 EVENT
If you missed Milton's last Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection day, or just finished that long-promised garage clean-out, or are preparing to sell your house, you may be wondering what to do with your new pile of old pesticides, aerosol cans, and oil-paint. If so, you're in luck. ~The Towns of Milton and Dedham have a reciprocal agreement that will allow 20 Milton residents to attend the upcoming October 14 HHW collection day in Dedham at no charge.
In exchange for Milton participation in the October 14 event, 20 Dedham residents will be invited to participate in Milton’s next HHW collection day which will be in late April, 2007. The specific date has not yet been chosen.
To participate in the Dedham HHW collection day, Milton residents must get a voucher from the Central Business office at Town Hall by 5pm, October 12. Vouchers will be issued on a first-come, first-serve basis to the first 20 residents. (Please note that Milton residents who go to the Dedham event without vouchers will be turned away.) The vouchers are free and will include directions to the Dedham DPW Yard.
The hours for the October 14 Dedham HHW collection day will be 9:00 am - 12:00 noon.
These HHW items will be accepted at the October 14 Milton-Dedham collection:
Adhesives and glues
Aerosol cans
Engine degreaser, brake and transmission fluid
Fluorescent light bulbs
Hobby and art supplies
Household cleaners and spot removers
Oil-based paints
Photo chemicals and chemistry sets
Poisons, insecticides and weed killers
Solvents and varnishes
Swimming pool chemicals
Waste fuels (kerosene, gasoline, antifreeze)
Wood preservatives and fiberglass residue
Do not bring these items to the Dedham collection. They will be rejected:
No latex paint **
No smoke detectors - these can be disposed of as trash
No prescription medicine or syringes
No infectious or biological wastes
No car tires
No commercial or industrial waste
No TVs or computer monitors
No household batteries (such as AA, D, etc) - these can be disposed as trash
No mercury-containing items (i.e., thermometers and thermostats)
No non-alkaline batteries (found in camcorders, cordless power tools, cordless phones and laptops)
** So what should you do with your latex paint?
Latex paint is not a hazardous waste because it is a water-based product. Because it is not considered hazardous, if it is dry latex paint can be disposed of as regular household trash.
If you have latex paint that is still in liquid form, please dry it out before disposing of it as trash. To dry small amounts, remove the lid and let the paint dry in the can. For larger amounts, mix kitty litter into the can to absorb the paint. Once the paint has been absorbed, you can put it in your household trash. You can also use a commercial paint hardener purchased from local hardware stores.
