POSITION: Assistant DPW Director-Operations
GRADE: _Level 10 ($1,325.59/wk to $1,657.29/wk)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees all aspects of the daily operations of the Department of Public Works, including water, sewer, highway, forestry and vehicle maintenance.
Oversees the daily work schedules and assignments; determines priorities among various projects and activities. Coordinates day-to-day operations; coordinates operations on department projects involving two or more divisions.
Performs inspections of ongoing projects and work performed by utility contractors.
Serves as liaison with engineering consultants retained by the town for special projects.
Plans and supervises snow removal operations of the Department of Public Works.
Oversees paving, water main installation and other work performed by contractors.
Responds to questions and complaints from town residents regarding Department of public Works activities.
Handles employee problems and questions
Performs other similar or related work, as required, or as situation dictates.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience
High school diploma; Associate=s Degree in a related field preferred; five to ten years construction experience, including progressively responsible experience operating a full range of equipment; supervisory experience and public contact; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement
Massachusetts Class A Commercial Driver=s License
Massachusetts Class B Hoisting License desired
Massachusetts Water Distribution License D-2 desired, D-3 License preferred
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge. Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques relative to public works projects and issues. Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques relative to road construction and maintenance. Knowledge of construction equipment use and repair. Knowledge of state and local procurement laws, rules, and regulations. Thorough knowledge of snow and ice control techniques and practices. Thorough knowledge of hazardous waste rules and regulations. Thorough knowledge of NPDES-II rules and regulations.
Ability. Ability to prepare specifications for vehicles and construction equipment. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications. Ability to establish quality control procedures for construction projects; ability to make modifications to construction projects, as required. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with town officials and departments, state agencies and the general public. Ability to supervise employees.
