Brief descriptions of the Southern Spine Distribution Project, Phases I and II can be found here.
Under Phase II of this project, which began construction in April 2010, the Contractor, RJV Construction of Canton, MA, will be installing a 48-inch ductile iron water main along Adams Street in Milton, from the Boston line in Milton Village to the westerly side of the Southeast Expressway, and tying into the work that was previously completed in Phase I. This 48-inch watermain, which replaces two existing 24-inch watermains, will be owned and operated by the MWRA and used for water transmission from MWRA water sources to the Town of Milton and neighboring cities including Quincy and Boston.
Further, as part of this project, the Contractor will also be upgrading the Town of Milton's local watermain on Adams Street from the existing 10-inch cast iron pipe, installed in the early 1900s, to a new 12-inch cement lined ductile iron pipe. This pipe is the current water supply feed for most of the residences along Adams Street and its replacement will require most houses to be connected to a temporary watermain at one time or another during the course of the project.
Phasing and Schedule
To complete all of the work on both the MWRA and Milton water mains along such a long stretch of roadway, the Contractor has broken down the project into numerous phases, and will have multiple crews working on different sections of Adams Street at any given time. Please click the links below to see approximate dates and phases (overlayed on a general site plan) that were submitted to the MWRA and the Town of Milton prior to the start of construction. The red lines and text represent work on MWRA facilities, while the blue lines and text represent work on Milton mains. As with any subsurface construction, plans and schedules can change very quickly depending on what is found beneath the ground. We will try to keep this page as up to date as possible, and any further questions regarding any of the work should be
directed to the MWRA at the number listed at the top of the page.
Traffic
While the Contractor is performing trenching operations over Milton Hill, Adams Street will be closed to all through traffic between Centre Street and Randolph Avenue. Detours will be in place directing traffic around the site, using Centre St. to Brook Rd. to Randolph Ave (or the reverse). This section of roadway will always be open to local traffic, as well as all emergency vehicles, school buses, and waste collection vehicles.
All other sections of Adams St. will remaining open to traffic at all times, although delays should be expected, as traffic will be routed around work crews.
Community Updates
Every so often, the MWRA will be releasing community updates regarding project status and milestones. These updates will be posted and archived below:
