TOWN-WIDE STREET TREE INVENTORY BEGINS
What would Milton look like without trees? Hard to imagine, isn’t it? But without proper long-term attention, Milton lush tree stock could suffer and diminish with time. To help ensure that Milton’s public street trees remain healthy, the Dept. of Public Works (DPW) has been awarded a grant from the MA Dept. of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) to perform a Town-wide tree inventory. This is the first time such a comprehensive study has been done.
The survey will include any trees located on Town-owned tree strips, but will not include any trees on private property.
The inventory will be performed by Davey Resource Group, a consulting group that has done street tree inventories for both Worcester and Springfield. Using hand-held computers, the Davey team of arborists will examine every tree planted on the Town-owned tree strips. Among other information, Davey will note each tree’s location, species, diameter, and overall condition. The inventory will proceed by precinct group, starting with precincts 6&7, then proceeding to precincts 1,2,4; then 3,10,11; and finally precincts 5,8, and 9. The inventory is expected to be completed within one month. Once all the information is gathered, the DPW will analyze the inventory’s findings and report the results to the Board of Selectmen.
To meet another requirement of the DCR grant, a new Urban Forestry Committee will begin meeting quarterly in winter, 2008. One of the Committee’s basic responsibilities will be to bring attention to Milton’s ongoing urban forestry management needs. Residents interested in serving on this five-member Committee can call Reva Levin, DPW Program Manager, at (617) 898-4871.
