MILTON, TREE CITY USA
The Town of Milton received notice that is officially a Tree City, USA community. The Town joins more than 80 Commonwealth communities, from North Adams to New Bedford to Gloucester, that have applied for and received Tree City USA status.
“I couldn’t be more delighted,” said Walter Heller, DPW Director. “This is a positive step in increasing our awareness of Milton’s wealth of public trees and in gathering support for their care and protection.”
Milton met four standards to be qualified: 1) A Department that is legally responsible for public tree care—this is the DPW; 2) A Community Tree Ordinance – this is Chapter 87 of the Mass. General Laws which outlines public tree protection; 3) A commitment to community forestry; and 4) An annual Arbor Day celebration.
Milton will be welcomed as a new Tree City USA community in an April 12th ceremony sponsored by the MA Dept. of Conservation & Recreation.
The Tree City USA® program, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities across America.
