Rain Barrels Available Again for Spring
Good news! Sustainable Milton and the Milton DPW have arranged for The Great American Rain Barrel Company in Hyde Park, MA. to offer reasonably price rain barrels to Milton residents.
Prices, including tax and delivery to the Milton DPW Yard where they will be picked up by residents on Saturday, May 17 are:
$58 for painted (green, gray, brown); $54 for unpainted (black or grey, based on availability); and $16 for a diverter. (The diverter fits into your downspout with two cuts, opens for water collection, then closes when the barrel is full or in the off-season. The rain barrel will work without the diverter; it is just a more efficient way of collecting water.)
Rain barrels are a way for residents to conserve water and help the environment. A rain barrel collects water from the roof when it rains and stores it for outdoor use during dry conditions or when water ban restrictions are in place.
The average homeowner's water usage increases approximately 60% during the summer months due to outdoor usage. A one inch rainfall on a 1,200 square foot roof will yield over 700 gallons of water. Using a rain barrel is an excellent way to conserve some of this water. A quarter inch run-off from an average roof will easily fill the barrel. If there are five storms a season, that equals 275 gallons of free water!
The Great American Rain Barrel has a screw-on lid, mosquito screen, a threaded spigot for hose attachment, a drain plug, an overflow valve, and an additional hole with plug for linking barrels together (you can join multiple barrels for additional capacity).
